HAVE YOU GOT A STORY IN YOU?
The FMP Collective is a group of psychiatric survivors who are working towards compiling an anthology of survivor writing.
We are looking for stories and poems that describe the many facets of our existence. Relationships, family, hospitalizations, struggles, victories, things that you have learned, all are topics we'd like to hear about, and more.
If this interests you, this is what you need to do:
Send us your material, if possible typed and double spaced, and/or on a computer disc. If you have no access to a computer, it should be written as clearly as you can.
If your writing is accepted, all we can promise is that you will be published. The Collective has no money, and though we would like to pay you, all we can offer you is a copy of the anthology once it is published.
Only send us copies of your work, do not send originals, as we are unable to return your submissions to you.
We will only be able to notify those whose work is accepted.
Our deadline for submissions is November 1, 2003
Please send submissions to:

Who We Are
The FMP Collective started out as a group of psychiatric survivors who came together on a regular basis to share and hone their skills as writers. Through this process they imagined the creation of an anthology of writing that would highlight the vast talent of psychiatric survivor writers. To this end, we continue to work diligently to realize this goal.

The Anthology -- Raking the Moon
This anthology, titled Raking the Moon, will not be one of grievances. It will instead concentrate on our transformation from mental patients to citizens, it will look at the extraordinary in the ordinary. It is intended to be a book of hope, of inspiration, of achievement, sparked by people who were never supposed to see the light of day. A book that will touch hearts and minds, and perhaps in doing so, open them up to encompass difference rather than fear it.
The Title -- Raking the Moon
The title "Raking the Moon" comes from a piece of English folklore. It is said that in and around 1607, the inhabitants of the village of Gotham were under threat of invasion by King John. When soldiers arrived, they found many of the villagers standing around a pond raking the water. When they were asked why, they told the soldiers that they were trying to rake the reflection of the moon off the surface of the pond. These villagers were feigning madness in the hopes that if they were perceived as crazy they would be left alone. (Interestingly, it was this piece of folklore that Washington Irving was thinking about when he nicknamed New York City "Gotham", saying that its habitants were "foolishly wise".) We like this title because it speaks to the idea that things are not always what they seem, that if you scratch below the surface the things you uncover might surprise you.
